Getting the best results from facelift surgery - what I learned from my surgery
Having a surgical facelift is indeed still a good option for many women and men who want to have a more defined face, softer skin, and a generally younger look.
To help you better understand this procedure and decide if it is right for you, here are some answers to the most common questions patients ask.
How do I know if I need a facelift?
When the daily use of creams and serums, or even non-surgical treatments, no longer seems to change the condition of your facial skin, it may be time to consider a facelift. If you suffer from sagging skin that easily sticks off your face and neck or hangs loose, a facelift is the only treatment that can help. A facelift removes this excess skin and creates a firm, youthful appearance.
How long after a facelift will I look normal?
Usually, the results of a facelift look very good after about 1 month, and you will look your best after 6 months. Facelift surgery can provide lasting results for several years. In addition, although each person's aging process is different, after 12-14 years many of my patients find that they no longer need additional procedures.
How is a facelift performed?
Depending on the cosmetic problem that the surgeon is trying to correct, different techniques may be used for a facelift. Under anesthesia, facelift incisions are usually made at the hairline around the cheek and extend to the lower part of the scalp. During this procedure, the surgeon cuts or removes fat reposition the underlying tissue and lifts the facial muscles. A small incision under the chin may be needed to address an aging neck. Once the procedure is complete, the incisions are closed with sutures or skin adhesive.
How do I recover from facelift surgery and what are the scars?
After a facelift, expect the lower face and neck to be sore and tense for the first few days. Pain killers are usually prescribed to relieve the discomfort. It is advisable to take a few weeks off work to allow you to recover. You may be advised not to do any strenuous exercise for at least three weeks. The healing time depends on the individual, but after about 10 days swelling and bruising should be minimal. Make-up is usually enough to hide the signs of the surgery until the face is fully healed. As the incisions run along the hairline, the scars of a facelift are usually not visible. Even if a chin incision is necessary, it should be made in such a way as to follow the natural creases of the chin and hide the scar.
How will I be able to see the approximate results of a facelift?
You may notice changes in your face immediately after the procedure. However, you will notice bruising and swelling for the first 2 weeks. After that, you will be able to hide the bruises with make-up. Your face may still not feel normal and it may take 2 to 3 months for full healing. Your face should look much more youthful and toned, and many patients can see an improvement of up to 10 years. For more information click here Read more here
