Blepharoplasty of the eyelids
Blepharoplasty of the eyelids is a surgical procedure to correct drooping eyelids by removing excess skin, muscle and fat. With age, the eyelids stretch and the muscles that support them weaken. As a result, excess fat accumulates above and below the eyelids, leading to drooping eyebrows, sagging upper eyelids and bags under the eyes.
Generally, ideal candidates for blepharoplasty include those who suffer from droopy lower eyelids that cause an increased amount of eye white to show, those who have sagging upper lids caused by a buildup of fatty tissue beneath the skin and individuals who are having their vision – especially their peripheral vision – obscured. Bags under the lower lids can also be corrected with blepharoplasty.
What are the signs of blepharoplasty (eyelid correction)?
Usually, our skin has an elastic shape. However, with age, their elasticity gradually decreases. Due to the loss of elasticity of the facial skin, excessive skin accumulates on the eyelids. Hence, the first signs of skin aging appear on the eyelids. Such changes on the eyelids lead to a tired and older appearance.
1. baggy eyes and color changes.
2. drooping upper eyelid.
3. wrinkles and sagging of the upper eyelid.
4. wrinkles around the eyes.
5. tired appearance.
The sagging of the skin on the eyelids causes drooping upper eyelids. Sometimes this problem can be so severe that it limits the patient's vision and results in a poorer aesthetic appearance. In this case, the condition must be treated functionally. When patients wish to undergo blepharoplasty for aesthetic or functional reasons, surgery can be performed on the upper eyelid or lower eyelid separately, or the two can be treated together. The blepharoplasty is often performed in conjunction with a brow lift and endoscopic midface surgery.
How is Upper Blepharoplasty performed?
During the upper eyelid surgery, excessive skin and muscle tissue is removed through small incisions. To avoid the scar being visible, it is performed by making an incision in the crease of the eyelid. It gives better cosmetic results when combined with a facelift and brow lift. The upper blepharoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia.
How is Lower Blepharoplasty performed?
Fatty glands that are located on the cheekbones move downwards due to gravity and as a result of the aging process. This results in sagging under the lower eyelid and a deep crease appearing around the mouth. As a first step, these pockets of fat under the eyes are lifted into their former place. Once these fat lumps have been replaced, there will be a check by the surgeon to determine if there is so much excess skin that it needs to be removed. An incision is made thinly just under the lash line and the excess skin is removed to tighten it and eliminate the sagging skin. If the under-eye skin looks concave (sunken), fat injection treatment may be performed to lift the skin.
What can you expect after eyelid correction?
After eyelid correction (blepharoplasty), patients look more younger and appealing. Face and eyes look bigger , fresher and more juvenile
1- Just after the surgery, you will wake up from anaesthesia in a recovery room. There will be no scar on the eyelids after the operation. As this area is very loose and self wrinkled, the incisions can be healed very quickly with a high success rate. You may not even notice that you had surgery after 1 month. The eyelids regain their lively form after the operation and will continue to maintain this look for many years.
2- At first, you may experience blurred or double vision, watery eyes, numb eyelids, light sensitivity, swelling, and bruising similar to having a black eye. Your doctor will inform you about any specific pain-relieving medications you have to take. Slightly elevating your head when sleeping will reduce swelling and bruising. Eyes may have to be cleaned gently with prescribed ointments. Eye drops will be necessary to prevent the eyes from drying out.
3- After about a week most patients have recovered enough to make short trips. Bruising should subside after 10-14 days. By this time you should feel confident to go out in the public again. Usually, patients can return to their jobs in 10-14 days after an eyelid lift. However, if your job requires staring at a computer screen for long periods of time, be careful about straining your eyes and attempt to gradually increase your workload.
4- You should not drive until your surgeon gives you clearance to do so.
What about combining eyelid blephoraplasty with facelift or other procedures?
The Eyelid Surgery correction is often performed in combination with other facial surgical procedures since the combination of two techniques can help achieve the desired more natural and youthful appearance of the face. As a result, blephoraplasty (Eyelid Correction) may be performed in conjunction with the following procedures:
1. brow lift
4. neck lift
